Room description
We live in a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom house near Polo Park. The downstairs bedroom is the largest (approximately 12x17’), and has thus far been used as an exercise room and library, but has gone under utilized for the past year or so. The room has legal egress, plus a smaller window, so it gets sun most days. There is also a very wide double door closet with extra under-the-stairs storage behind.
Furnishing for the room could include: a double bed (linens could also be provided), crates for shelving use, a mini fridge/convection burner/plug in kettle, a futon/futon chair with footstool, reclining easy chair, tv (not connected to cable), a table and chair that could easily be used as a desk or eating area, a storage chest, houseplants, and exercise equipment (treadmill, chin-up bar, bands). If you like the library vibe, you could also keep the bookshelves with access to library (which would reduce the living space).*
The basement bathroom would be partially shared, and has a shower. The laundry is in the basement, so easy access, with potential for more storage space available there as well. The back door entrance would also be partially shared.
The rest of the house is comprised of a large storage room (that is currently in use, but has active grown lights if you were interested in harvesting greens/herbs throughout the winter months), kitchen with adjoining dining space, furnished living room, and the two upstairs bedrooms. The smaller bedroom could be converted into an office for an extra fee, if you are someone who studies or works from home, and would like the extra space away from your living space.
We have been living in our home for about 7 years. We have all of the usual furnishings (dining table, living room furniture, kitchen utensils and appliances), so that would not need to be provided. All utilities are included; we have wifi and streaming services but no cable. Water and heat/AC are included.
We use most of our yard as garden space. With a bit of pitching in, you’d be welcome to harvest as many veggies as you’d like! We also have a fire pit, compost, and flowered area for bees and butterflies. There is also access to a community garden less than a 10 minute walk away, which would also be available for shared work/harvest.
We are within walking distance from Portage Avenue (10-15 minutes to bus stops, restaurants and grocery stores), and Polo Park (20-25 minutes, access to bus hub, restaurants, grocery stores, mlcc, etc.), and there is ample street parking if you drive.
Our property is very close to a beautiful walking and biking path. It goes past a creek that has beavers and muskrats, and a lot of lightly treed/open areas where there are deer, foxes and other wildlife. There is also an outdoor aviation museum about 20 minutes down the path. If you go far enough, you can wander through the Living Prairie Museum, and the adjacent forest.
Our neighborhood is quiet and has a lot of young couple, families, and semi-retired folks. There are two parks within walking distance that we take our nieces and nephews to when they visit. The street is typically clean and there is good rapport among the neighbours.
*If you require furnishings, rent would be raised by $100. If you have a second person renting with you, rent would be raised by $150.
We are both small business owners. My partner sub-contracts to a repair and restoration company, and I make breakfast foods and snacks to sell in retail locations and at farmer’s markets around the province. I am also a bakery manager, and come home with free pastries/breads/pizzas/soups, etc. very regularly, and am more than happy to share!
We both attend yoga classes several times per week, and are typically early to bed, early to rise. We enjoy our downtime, although it often feels like we don’t get enough of it!** A typical day may involve mediation, work, dinner, yard work, yoga and some tv or reading.
We don’t entertain often, and would provide notice on the occasions that we would. We are looking for a roommate who is fairly quiet and clean. We live plant based, and would appreciate a roommate who is amenable to helping us to keep our kitchen meat-free. If you would like to furnish your room with a small kitchenette (or can be provided), we would not ask that you necessarily keep that area meat-free.
If you have any questions at all, please reach out! We look forward to hearing from you.
**We are very open to trading a reduction in rent for help with cleaning and yard work. Please contact for details if this is something that interests you.
